Hide - Piel

Some time ago, I said in this blog that I would post some pictures of the project I was working on. Here they are! It is made of commercial cotton fabrics, machine pieced and appliqued, and hand quilted. The border is a stripe of cotton that I purchased in Mali, West Africa, ten years ago. It is hand woven and still has some of the impurities from the cotton bolls. They weave this cotton in narrow looms, making long stripes that need to be sewn together to make larger pieces. I made three rows of some kind of piping, using a technique I learned in Mali. I hand backstitched two layers of these stripes making three "channels", and I stuffed those channels with cotton cord. The frame is made of tree branches, and the quilt is attached to the corners with leather lace. The desired effect is that of a hide drying on a frame. That is why I called it "Hide". Not counting the frame, the size of the quilt is 48x48 inches.

Hace algún tiempo dije en este blog que pondría unas fotos de la labor en la que estaba trabajando. ¡Aquí están! La labor está hecha de telas de algodón comerciales, cosidas y aplicadas a máquina, y acolchada a mano. El borde es una tira de algodón que compré en Mali, Africa occidental, hace diez años. Está tejida a mano y todavía tiene algunas impurezas de los capullos del algodón. Tejen este algodón en telares estrechos, haciendo largas tiras que hay que coser juntas para hacer piezas más grandes. Hice tres filas de una suerte de encañonado, con una técnica que aprendí en Mali. Pespunteé a mano dos capas de estas tiras haciendo tres "canales", y rellené esos canales con cordón de algodón. El marco está hecho de ramas de árbol y el quilt está atado a las esquinas con cordón de cuero. El efecto deseado es el de una piel puesta a secar en un bastidor. Por eso lo he llamado "Piel". Sin contar el marco, mide 120x120 centímetros.
